Loneliness is a distressing state of mind characterized by the absence of meaningful social connection and associated with depression, anxiety, suicide attempts, health problems, and reduced quality of life (NEJM JW Psychiatry Jul 2019 and PLoS ONE 2019; 14:215182). Researchers in Sweden conducted a randomized, controlled pilot study of a therapist-assisted, Internet-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) directed at loneliness in 73 adults with high scores on the UCLA Loneliness Scale and without personality disorder, substance abuse, suicidality, current psychotherapy, or need for treatment of other conditions.
