A few studies have linked first-trimester use of benzodiazepines to early spontaneous abortion (SA). Investigators expanded on this research by using Quebec medical and pharmacy databases of 422,066 pregnancies over an 18-year period to conduct a nested case-control study that compared each pregnancy ending with SA (occurring between weeks 6 and 19) with 5 controls without SA (161,454 evaluated pregnancies).
Most of the 1163 pregnancies with first-trimester benzodiazepine exposure involved a single prescription that averaged 24 pills over 17 days.
