Despite several studies suggesting that tubal ligation can diminish ovarian reserve, the effects of this procedure on age at natural menopause remain unknown. In a cross-sectional study of three population-based Minnesota cohorts analyzed separately (total number of participants, 3905), Mayo Clinic investigators assessed age at menopause, as well as other characteristics, among women who had or had not undergone tubal ligation.
Rates of tubal ligation were similar in all three cohorts (26.0%, 25.5%, and 25.0%) as was mean age at time of the procedure (34.9, 35.3, and 36.0 years).
