Approximately 10% to 15% of strokes occur in adults younger than 50 years. Although the overall prognosis for stroke recovery is better in young adults than in older patients, limited information is available on long-term mortality in young-adult stroke survivors. To provide such information, investigators examined outcomes among 15,257 survivors of stroke at age 18 through 49 (median age, 44; 53% women), identified from nationwide hospital and population registries in the Netherlands.
