Estimates of new-onset atrial fibrillation (AF) after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) or surgical AVR (SAVR) have ranged between 8% and 100%. For a better estimate, researchers analyzed data on 48,715 TAVR and 122,765 SAVR patients from the large National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database.
New-onset AF occurred in 50.4% of TAVR patients and 50.1% of SAVR patients. Not surprisingly, new-onset AF was associated with advancing age, white race, chronic kidney disease, pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure, and prior valve surgery.
