Bystander initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and placement of automated external defibrillator (AED) pads are important for maximizing favorable outcomes in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), but females may be less likely to receive these treatments than males (J Am Heart Assoc 2019; 8:e010324).
To evaluate gender-based differences in AED placement or CPR among youth suffering cardiac arrest at school, researchers reviewed data from a Japanese OHCA registry. Arrests due to trauma, occurring after arrival of emergency medical services, or with unknown initial rhythm were excluded.
