Researchers from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging analyzed data to determine the trajectory of cognitive decline before and after a self-reported doctor-diagnosed incident stroke in 9278 participants without dementia and stroke at baseline (mean age 63; 57% women). Participants included those who completed tasks on global cognition, memory, semantic fluency, and orientation to time at baseline and at least one follow-up assessment.
During a mean follow-up of 9 years, 471 incident strokes were identified. Time from baseline to stroke averaged 6 years.
