To evaluate whether nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are necessary components of salvage antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens, the OPTIONS trial enrolled participants with HIV infection who were failing protease-inhibitor therapy and had triple-class experience or drug resistance. Participants for whom a regimen with cumulative activity of more than two drugs was available were randomized to either add NRTIs to, or omit them from, their optimized regimen.
