Investigators conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the prevalence of bacterial meningitis in infants aged 29 to 90 days who have abnormal urinalysis or urine culture and have undergone lumbar puncture (LP). The well-structured search yielded 20 studies (3 prospective, 17 retrospective) that were subject to a robust statistical analysis of the pooled data.
Among a total of 3868 infants, they identified 11 cases of bacterial meningitis. Random effects modeling of pooled data demonstrated a prevalence of 0.25% (confidence interval 0.09%–0.7%) for bacterial meningitis in infants with urinary tract infection (UTI).
