Researchers from the Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi Project analyzed data to determine 90-day poststroke outcomes in Mexican-American and non-Hispanic white participants in Nueces County, Texas. Ischemic stroke participants were surveilled through routine screening of hospital admission logs and discharge diagnosis codes. Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) was identified by a respiratory event index (REI) of ≥10 per hour on a home sleep study. Evaluation of poststroke outcomes included measures of functional activities of daily living, quality of life, cognitive ability, and neurological outcomes on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
