Previous studies suggest that hepatitis C virus (HCV) eradication with direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) improves liver-related outcomes including reduction in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk, especially compared with those who have not been treated (NEJM JW Gastroenterol Apr 2019 and Lancet 2019; 393:1453).
In a large retrospective study, researchers examined overall and quarterly HCC incidence in over 18,000 patients from 129 Veterans Health Administration hospitals who achieved HCV infection cure (sustained virologic response) with DAA therapy in 2015.
