HIV care is expensive for various reasons, particularly the high cost of HIV drugs in the U.S. Because of reports of variability in costs across the U.S., investigators estimated the quarterly mean costs of care for 40,022 patients (mean age, 39) followed at 17 HIV Research Network sites across the country and then used quantile regression to highlight differences in the effect of key factors within each patient group.
The mean quarterly costs of care were highest for people living with HIV (PWH) and advanced disease who inject drugs (CD4 <200 cells/mm3) and for those receiving ART.
