Major depressive disorder (MDD) is refractory to antidepressants in about one third of patients. A growing literature indicates that targeting inflammation might reduce depression. Statins, commonly used for hypercholesterolemia, have anti-inflammatory properties and reduce levels of C-reactive protein and other inflammatory biomarkers. Although some physicians have been concerned that statins could worsen depressive symptoms in nondepressed patients, meta-analyses of randomized, controlled trials concluded that statins neither helped nor harmed nondepressed patients but did improve depressive symptoms in patients with MDD.
