While meta-analyses have examined the relative efficacy and tolerability of antipsychotics for people with first-episode, chronic, treatment-resistant, and predominantly negative-symptom schizophrenia, no studies have focused on the larger group of individuals with acute schizophrenia and without those characteristics. In a network meta-analysis covering 402 randomized, controlled trials (duration, 3–13 weeks) involving 53,463 subjects with acute schizophrenia, researchers examined the efficacy and tolerability of 32 antipsychotic medications available in the U.S., the U.K., and Europe. The network meta-analysis allowed for direct and indirect comparisons of medications and placebo across trials.
