Immunosuppression associated with solid organ transplantation confers excess risk for malignancy. Investigators at an academic U.S. center tracked 394 women who underwent solid organ transplant between 2000 and 2015 (median age, 41; 50% black). Kidney transplants accounted for most recipients, with liver, lung, and heart transplants comprising the majority of the remainder.
Forty-seven women developed lower genital tract dysplasia (cervical, vaginal, vulvar, or anal) during a median follow-up of 7.8 years. In all, 38 had cervical dysplasia; of these, 14 had diagnoses of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2 (CIN 2) or worse and 1 had invasive cancer.
