In 2015, several published clinical trials demonstrated the value of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for patients with acute ischemic stroke and evidence of large-vessel occlusion (LVO). These trials enrolled primarily patients with moderate-to-severe strokes; patients with mild deficits at presentation were either excluded or underrepresented. Some patients presenting with mild deficits, defined as an NIH Stroke Scale score of ≤5, have evidence of an LVO, and the optimal treatment of these patients is uncertain.
