There is widespread disagreement regarding the type of pancreatic stent that should be placed during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) to minimize the risk for post-ERCP pancreatitis. Stents with internal flaps are largely assured to stay in place until they are removed endoscopically. Stents without internal flaps are intended to fall out several days after placement when they are no longer needed. Although the latter type might save the patient from a second endoscopic procedure, if the stent does not migrate spontaneously, it can cause duct injury, pancreatitis, and other problems.
