In 2013, peripheral neuropathy was added to the “serious adverse reactions” listed in the prescribing information for fluoroquinolones, primarily based on case reports. The following year, an association between fluoroquinolones and neuropathy was documented in a U.S. case-control study (NEJM JW Neurol Nov 2014 and Neurology 2014; 83:1261). Now, researchers have used a U.K. primary care database to examine this association in another case-control study: 5300 patients with new diagnoses of peripheral neuropathy were compared with 17,300 age- and sex-matched controls without that diagnosis. Patients with diabetes were excluded, given the strong associations between diabetes and both antibiotic use and neuropathy.
