Antibiotic prophylaxis given prior to incision has a clear benefit in decreasing the incidence of surgical site infection (SSI), but what are relative risks and benefits of continuing antibiotic prophylaxis?
To address this question, investigators undertook a national retrospective analysis of the incidence of SSI, acute kidney injury (AKI), and Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in relation to the type and duration of prophylaxis in 79,058 patients (96.3% men; mean age, 64.8 years) who underwent cardiac, colorectal, vascular, and total joint-replacement surgery within the Veterans Affairs Healthcare system from 2008 to 2013.
