There remains uncertainty as to whether people who reach a certain age can discontinue a statin without facing additional risks. The little existing trial evidence has suggested a benefit from statins into older age. In an observational study using a French national healthcare database, researchers sought to determine the risk of discontinuing statins given as primary prevention in patients turning age 75 in 2012–2014.
The 120,173 participants had no history of cardiovascular disease and had filled prescriptions for statins for 2 years (medication possession ratio, ≥80%).
