Nonadherence to medications for inflammatory bowel disease has been associated with increased healthcare utilization and worse outcomes in both adult and pediatric populations. A recent study provided an opportunity to study the longitudinal relationship between medication nonadherence and treatment escalation.
A cohort of 268 children aged 4 to 17 years were prescribed mesalamine for newly diagnosed ulcerative colitis. Medication adherence was tracked for 1 year with the use of electronic memory caps on pill bottles and reported as percentage of medication consumed per month. Sufficient data for analysis were available for months 2 through 7.
