Exclusion of the duodenum through bariatric surgery has shown immediate benefit of improved glycemic control, independent of weight loss, in obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Endoscopic duodenal mucosal resurfacing (DMR) — a new minimally invasive technique that involves circumferential hydrothermal ablation of the postampullary duodenal mucosa — might present a novel approach to improving glycemic control in T2D.
