Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are known to be at increased risk for cardiac events and venous thrombosis events, linked to a chronic inflammatory state (Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol 2014; 12:382). Now, a population-based study from Denmark suggests that individuals with IBD also have an elevated risk for type 2 diabetes. Data from 1977 to 2014 were examined for all residents aged >30 years. The standardized incidence ratio was 1.54 for type 2 diabetes in the population with IBD compared with the rest of the population. The risk was higher for those aged ≥40 and in patients diagnosed from 2003 to 2014 versus earlier time periods.
