These researchers describe the natural history of a syndrome, first reported in 2004, in which the presence of autoantibodies to interferon-γ (IFN-γ) creates an immunodeficiency state associated with opportunistic infections comprised mostly of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). The investigators followed up on 74 patients (median follow-up duration, 7.5 years) at a single medical center in Thailand and 23 patients at the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. (19 followed by chart review for a median of 4.5 years).
All patients seen in Thailand were of Southeast Asian descent; 64% were female. Of the U.S. patients, 91% were of Southeast Asian descent, 9% were U.S.-born Caucasians, and 91% were female. Other differences included preponder…
