The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in refugees (people forced to migrate because of persecution, armed conflict, violence, or public disorder) is well known. In this systematic review and meta-analysis of nine studies, researchers examined reported rates of nonaffective psychosis (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, schizophreniform disorder) among a total of 540,000 refugees who migrated to Canada or one of several Scandinavian countries.
Excluding studies with a high risk for bias, nonaffective psychoses were 39% higher in refugees than in nonrefugee migrants, 141% higher in refugees than in people native to the country to which they migrated, and 92% higher in nonrefugee migrants than in the native population. Excluding…
