Vedolizumab is FDA approved to treat ulcerative colitis. Currently it is administered intravenously, which can be inconvenient for patients. In a recent industry-funded, phase III study, researchers assessed its efficacy when delivered subcutaneously for maintenance therapy.
Nearly 400 patients with severe to moderate ulcerative colitis received open-label intravenous (IV) vedolizumab for induction, and 216 were then randomized to maintenance therapy with subcutaneous vedolizumab every 2 weeks, IV vedolizumab every 8 weeks, or placebo and followed through week 52.
