Over-the-scope clips (OTSCs) are a relatively new endoscopic option for treatment of both upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. These are large, clamp-like devices that fit over the tip of an endoscope and are deployed using a technique similar to that used in band ligation. However, their technical and clinical success rates for controlling GI bleeding are unknown.
In a systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers examined the effectiveness of OTSCs in achieving definitive hemostasis in GI bleeding (successful hemostasis without rebleeding during follow-up). They identified 21 studies that included 851 patients; 687 had upper GI bleeding (UGIB) and 164 had lower GI bleeding (LGIB). The median duration of follow-up was 56 days.…
