Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) remains among the most complex and risky procedures performed in endoscopy. Debate has raged over how many procedures are required to attain competence in ERCP and how best to measure it.
In a new prospective study, 123 trainers used a 27-item competency assessment tool known as Direct Observation of Procedural Skill (DOPS) to assess abilities of 109 trainees from 80 U.K. centers in performing cannulation, sphincterotomy, sphincteroplasty, plastic and metal stent placement, and other maneuvers. Data regarding report and management plan creation as well as nontechnical skills like judgment and decision making were also analyzed.
