Hypertension complicates about 10% of pregnancies. In such cases, blood pressure (BP) is intensively monitored with frequent antepartum visits and treated as necessary. To assess the clinical usefulness of postpartum home BP monitoring, 409 women with a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (75% white, 21% black, 4% Asian or other; 67% privately insured) were enrolled in a study of home BP measurements. During their postpartum hospitalization, participants were provided with an automated BP device, trained in its use, and contacted through their cell phone to establish an account with a remote monitoring company.
