Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a favorable prognostic marker but is present in less than 10% of gastric cancers. Given the uncommon presence of MSI, its impact on the outcome of adjuvant therapy in locally advanced gastric cancer has not been clearly defined.
Investigators have now conducted a multinational meta-analysis of MSI in four contemporary adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy trials in resected gastric cancer. MSI status was available from 1556 patients (71% men; 63% Asian; 37% European). MSI was present in 121 (7.8%) of patients. Of all patients, 45% had intestinal histology, 71% underwent surgery and chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy, and 29% underwent surgery alone.
