A prior report of the phase III trial CheckMate 227 trial (NEJM JW Oncol Hematol Jul 2018 and N Engl J Med 2018; 378:2093) showed that chemotherapy-naive patients with metastatic non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and a high tumor-mutation burden achieved improved progression-free survival with nivolumab plus ipilimumab versus chemotherapy alone during a minimum of 11.2 months of follow-up. Now, investigators have assessed overall survival (OS) of the 1739 patients in the trial during a minimum of 29.3 months of follow-up.
Results were as follows:
Median OS among the 1189 patients with PD-L1 expression >1% (the primary endpoint) was improved with nivolumab plus ipilimumab versus chemotherapy (17.1 vs. 14.9 months; P=0.007).
