Lithium during the first trimester of pregnancy has long been associated with congenital cardiac abnormalities, and so, understandably, clinicians and patients have hesitated to use lithium during pregnancy. To update knowledge about the harms and benefits of lithium during pregnancy, investigators conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The eight studies (with 13 comparisons) that met criteria for meta-analysis involved comparisons of women with bipolar disorder and antenatal lithium exposure with either nonexposed women with bipolar disorders or general populations. Study size ranged from 17 to nearly 1.35 million pregnancies.
