In November 2018, we summarized a study published in JAMA that showed that a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) self-management plan, initiated at the time of hospital admission, led to significantly fewer COPD-related admissions or emergency department visits and improved health-related quality of life after 6 months (NEJM JW Gen Med Jan 1 2019 and JAMA 2018; 320:2335). The authors now have discovered and reported a programming error that, when corrected, shows harm with this self-management protocol (JAMA 2019; 322:1371).
