Considerable controversy surrounds whether macrolides in addition to ß-lactams are beneficial in the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Although macrolides expand the spectrum of an antibiotic regimen to atypical pathogens and are supposed to have immunomodulatory properties, they are also associated with potential cardiovascular toxicity and potential drug interactions.
