Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated polyneuropathy with a yearly incidence of 1.2 to 2.3 per 100,000 people worldwide (J Clin Immunol 2010; 30 suppl 1: S74). GBS causes rapid and progressive limb weakness with arreflexia and maximal weakness at 4 weeks. Several randomized, controled trials have shown that intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and plasma exchange are effective therapies. Some controversy exists about giving a second dose of IVIG in severe cases of GBS with poor prognosis.
