The schema predicted mortality of patients admitted to the cardiac ICU.
A recently proposed expert consensus statement — a multisociety document developed with leadership by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) — proposed five hemodynamic stages of cardiogenic shock, further stratified by the presence or absence of cardiac arrest (CA). In a Mayo Clinic study, investigators retrospectively applied the schema to 10,004 patients admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) between 2007 and 2015.
At admission, 43% of patients were diagnosed with acute coronary syndromes, 46% with heart failure, and 12% with CA. The stages of the schema and the percentages of participants in each were as follows:
A: Hemodynamic stability with high risk, 46%
B: Hypotension/tachycardia, 30%
C: Hypoperf…
