Two recent studies examine the effects of therapeutic marijuana use in patients with suicidality or cocaine use disorder (COC).
Medical marijuana, now legal in 30 states, can be prescribed for PTSD treatment in most of them. Allan and colleagues prospectively studied whether concurrent alcohol, cannabis, and opioid use predicted suicidal thoughts and behaviors in 545 current or former military personnel with suicidality histories. Overall, 83% screened positive for PTSD. Analyses used latent growth curve modeling. Among individuals with higher baseline PTSD symptom severity, greater marijuana use (but not heavy drinking or 30-day opioid use) was associated with increases in suicidal behavior over 1 year and in PTSD symptoms.
