E-cigarettes are the most common source of tobacco exposure in children and teens. The most recent National Youth Tobacco Survey (2019) provides data on prevalence and characteristics of e-cigarette use in 10,097 high school students and 8837 middle school students, as follows:
E-cigarette use was reported by 27.5% of high school students (mean age, 16 years) and 10.5% of middle school students (mean age, 13 years).
Among these e-cigarette users:
One third of high schoolers and 18% of middle schoolers used e-cigarettes ≥20 days in the past month.
Juul was the brand used by ≥50%.
Flavored e-cigarettes were used by 72% of high schoolers and 59% of middle schoolers.
