Little is known about the differences in trends in acute pancreatitis (AP) on a global level, which is surprising given that AP is a common cause of gastrointestinal-related hospital admissions worldwide. Using a recently created database of AP cases identified prospectively by an international consortium, researchers now describe demographic and clinical characteristics and outcomes in 1600 patients enrolled in India, Europe, Latin America, and North America.
Gallstones (45%) and alcohol (21%) were the most common etiologies.
Severity was mild in 65% of cases, moderate in 23%, and severe in 12%.
Median hospitalization duration was 8 days, and in-hospital mortality was 3%.
Patients in North America had the shortest hospitalizations.
