For decades, monopolar transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) has been the mainstay surgical treatment for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). During monopolar TURP, the prostate adenoma is removed, piece by piece, with a monopolar electrode. In this network meta-analysis of 109 randomized controlled trials, researchers compared the efficacy and safety of monopolar TURP with eight newer endoscopic surgical modalities for BPH.
Nearly 14,000 men (median age, 68) were included in the analysis.
