The use of a self-expanding metal stent (SEMS) to treat pancreatic duct strictures has been explored only in a limited manner, mostly in case reports and small case series.
In a recent study in Korea, investigators prospectively assessed stricture resolution in 25 patients with chronic pancreatitis who underwent placement of a modified, short, fully covered SEMS for symptomatic, refractory, benign pancreatic duct stricture. The stent used had a saddle-like configuration and was available in shorter lengths (1–3 cm) than those typically used in the bile duct. It was fitted with a long lasso attachment to facilitate removal. Stents were removed 3 months after deployment, at which time follow-up pancreatograms were obtained.
