Vitamin E acetate, an ester of α-tocopherol, is a component of skin care products and dietary supplements; it also has been detected in some electronic cigarette (e-cigarette; vaping) products. Investigators at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) believe that this compound might be responsible, at least in part, for e-cigarette, or vaping, product use–associated lung injury (EVALI).
Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from 29 patients with EVALI in 10 different states were analyzed for various potentially toxic compounds and for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Vitamin E acetate was found in all 29 samples, and THC was found in 23 samples. Other potential additives of concern (e.g., oils, petroleum distillates) were not detected in any samples.
