Although autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has positive effects on tendon healing in laboratory settings, evidence of its effectiveness is less compelling in clinical trials. Nonetheless, PRP injection is used widely for such injuries. In this trial, researchers in the U.K. randomized 230 adults (mean age, 46) with Achilles tendon rupture within the previous 12 days to PRP or placebo injections. All participants received standard care (ankle immobilization followed by physical therapy).
At 24 weeks, no differences between the groups were noted in muscle tendon function, as measured by the validated heel rise endurance test, or in any secondary outcomes (e.g., patient-reported function, quality of life, pain) or adverse events.
