The positive results with ketamine on depressive disorders and suicidal behavior have encouraged investigators to explore other potential uses of ketamine. The current research group, which previously found encouraging effects of ketamine on cocaine addiction (NEJM JW Psychiatry Aug 2019 and Am J Psychiatry 2019; 176:923), has now examined its use in a randomized, controlled, double-blind study of alcohol use disorder (AUD).
The 40 treatment-seeking participants had AUD and no medical or psychiatric comorbidities and received motivational enhancement therapy (6 sessions in 5 weeks) plus additional medical supervision visits.
