After pertussis vaccination was recommended for all pregnant women, pertussis hospitalizations among infants too young for vaccination fell by about 50%, according to a JAMA research letter.
Researchers used private insurance databases to examine pertussis hospitalizations among nearly 2 million infants under age 2 months between 2009 and 2017.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended in 2012 that all pregnant women receive the tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine. After the recommendation, pertussis hospitalizations fell to 3.3 per 100,000 infants, down from 8.4 per 100,000 before the recommendation.
