Because elderly patients are underrepresented in clinical trials, data on statin use in this population are lacking, and unsubstantiated concerns about statin-related side effects, including cognitive decline, remain pervasive. To examine this issue, investigators examined data from a prospective, longitudinal study on 1037 community-dwelling elderly Australians (baseline ages, 70–90; white, 98%); 395 were identified as statin never-users and 642 as statin ever-users.
Study participants were free from dementia at baseline and had comprehensive neuropsychological testing every 2 years. About 55% of the cohort had complete data for the 6 years of follow-up.
