Atherogenic (apolipoprotein-B containing) lipoproteins mediate the association of hypercholesterolemia with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Measurement of non-HDL cholesterol (non-HDL-c) to capture the total amount of atherogenic lipoproteins is simple and clinically available. To evaluate the effects of elevated non-HDL-c on a first CV event (coronary heart disease event or ischemic stroke) investigators analyzed data from the Multinational Cardiovascular Risk Consortium (38 cohorts from North America, Europe, and Australia).
