For women who experience breast cancer recurrence after lumpectomy and whole-breast irradiation (WBI), the efficacy of subsequent lumpectomy and partial-breast irradiation (PBI) is unclear.
To assess this approach, investigators conducted a prospective, single-arm, multicenter, phase II trial (NRG Oncology/RTOG 1014) involving 58 evaluable patients (mean age, 65 years; 83% white) who experienced in-breast tumor recurrence ≥1 year after initial lumpectomy and WBI for early breast cancer including ductal carcinoma in situ.
