Once again it's time for our report on the top stories of the year. The NEJM Journal Watch Infectious Diseases editorial board was essentially unanimous in its selection of the top two articles we covered this past year. The two studies address the ability to complete treatment of both endocarditis and bone and joint infections with oral therapy in selected patients. Two other notable reports relate to antimicrobial therapy: One addressed the concerns raised by the FDA on the safety of fluoroquinolones, and the other the introduction of baloxavir, a new agent for treatment of influenza A and B with a novel mechanism of action.
