As in the United States, the majority of infant meningococcal disease in Europe is caused by meningococcal serogroup B. The development of a serogroup B vaccine has been challenging due to poor immunogenicity and concerns for potential neurologic cross reactivity.
In 2015, the United Kingdom introduced infant vaccination with a four-component protein vaccine directed against meningococcal group B (4CMenB), to be administered at 8 and 16 weeks of age with a booster at 12 months. To evaluate vaccine efficacy in the 3 years following its introduction, researchers compared invasive meningococcal disease rates before and after 4CMenB introduction.
